An article from AZ India Times – by Hari Gottipati
As many of the readers of this technology column know, my passion lies in technology – and more specifically, healthcare technology–at least these days. As I age, I have started to care more about health and have joined a boot camp at my local Gym.
This month, I would like to tell you about a remarkable start-up called The Touchpoint Solution, based locally here in Scottsdale, AZ, that has recently come to my attention. I had a chance to sit down with the co-founders, neuropsychologist Dr. Amy Serin and serial entrepreneur Vicki Mayo, to chat about their wellness technology.
How it started:
The Touchpoint Solution’s mission is “Better living through neuroscience” and was started in late 2015 with the goal of making the world a more peaceful, healthy and productive place by two co-founders –Vicki Mayo, CEO and co-founder, is a former public servant with a background in children’s advocacy and Dr. Amy Serin, owner of the Serin Center clinics, and co-founder and Chief Science Officer of The Touchpoint Solution, isolated a successful component of PTSD treatment and embedded it into TouchPoints.
It all started when Vicki and Dr. Serin met at their kid’s school and quickily became mommy-friends. Vicki mentioned that her seven-year-old daughter was having terrible night terrors that made bedtime and waking up a real struggle every single night. Amy gave two clinical devices to Vicki to help her daughter relax. Vicki put them on and wached her daugher fall asleep peacefully. She sighed and sign of relief–it was the first time her daughter had slept through the whole night in years. Vicki was so happy that she asked what these clinical devices were and how they worked. Amy explained that it was an early prototype of something she’d developed out of a successful form of PTSD treatment and that this type of technology was traditionally very expensive and confined to a doctor’s office. This was the “ah-hah” moment for the dynamic duo and the precise moment The Touchpoint Solution was born.
Vicki and Amy worked on getting this technology to the mass market by miniaturizing the technology and creating TouchPoints twin neuroscientific wearables that are worn on either side of the body preventatively or on-the-spot for 15 minutes before, during or after a stressful situation.
Technology behind Touchpoints
Touchpoints use BLAST (Bi-Lateral Alternating Stimulation Tactile) technology to get users out of a “fight-or-flight” mode and reduce stress in 30 seconds or less. BLAST is an isolated component of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy that has been used by Clinical neuropsychologists to help patients with ADHD, Autism, PTSD, and Anxiety.
I quizzed Dr. Amy Serin to go into the details of the science behind Touchpoints, as I was curious about it myself. As she explained it to me, “Stress is not something that is constant, it is switched on and switched off throughout the day, and when it happens, our body responds in what is called Fight, Freeze, Flight (F3) response to anxiety and stress. Touchpoints use what is known as BLAST in the form of gentle vibrations to help the central nervous system restore homeostasis functioning and get the mind to think and reason rationally and logically and think clearly and experience calm.”
She says, typically users start seeing results in 30 seconds or less. The BLAST technology not only helps to reduce the amount of perceived stress experienced, but also the associated body sensation that comes with it (i.e., stomach butterflies or tightness in the chest).
Touchpoints Originals vs Basics
Vicki mentions they have two products on the market today. Touchpoint Originals and Touchpoint Basics.
The Touchpoint Originals work with a companion app both for Android and iOS, that allows a user to control the Touchpoints as a remote control. The App provides various presets for calm, sleep, focus, anger, performance, and cravings. In addition, a user can adjust the frequency, intensity, and overlap of the vibrations to their desired comfort level.
The Touchpoint Basics, unlike the Originals, have only 3 presets and don’t need an app to control them. They are specifically designed for kids and adults that don’t need all the finer control provided the Touchpoint Originals. They don’t use Bluetooth, they use IR (infrared) to pair with each other. Imagine a scenario where kids are not allowed to have Smarthphones in school, Touchpoint Basics is a great option for kids to wear all day at school.
I have started playing with the Touchpoint Originals and I should say I am hooked. The app walked me through to take a free Personality Stress Profile (PSP) test, a quick set of 12 questions, and gave me my PSP type from the 6 PSP types (Craver, Hot Wired, Veiled, Scattered, and Overwhelmed). I highly encourage you to take your own PSP test by downloading the Mobile App from your app store.
Vicki mentioned that they also have a 30-day money back guarantee, so head on to their website at http://www.ilovetouchpoints.com. Or, feel free to call them at 1-877-77-TOUCH and mention that you read about them in the AZIndia Times newspaper!
