See Your Brain Wave Patterns in 3-D
Why understanding and training your brain patterns can be the key to a better life.
Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, Gamma…You’ve probably heard about brain waves in the past, but do you know what those brain waves mean for your daily functioning? Did you know that scientists can now diagnose Autism and many mental illnesses just by looking at brain wave patterns in the key networks of the brain? And that the American Academy of Pediatrics rates neurofeedback (brain training based on a qEEG) as being a top treatment for ADHD?
With decades of disappointing results from anti-depressants and other traditional medical model strategies for helping people live better lives, more and more people are looking to neuroscience to provide concise answers and better solutions to what ails them.
So where do we start? First, a qEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram). It’s a mouthful, I know. But neuroscientists love qEEGs. Why? Several reasons:
- We can get our data with no needles, pills, or radiation.
- We can get quality qEEGs in the comfort of our offices. No hospital stays needed.
- qEEGs only take about 45 minutes of your time to get a read.
- The reliability (the chance we would measure the same thing again) and validity (the chance we are measuring what we say we are measuring) are both extremely high. This means our results will be valid and the interpretations will be relevant.
- qEEGs are often less expensive than other brain scans or tests.
- qEEGs measure the live activity of the brain- not just the structure of the brain.
Why get a qEEG?
It’s great that neuroscientists love qEEGs for the above reasons. But why should you be interested in getting one? Well, the outdated methods of diagnosing are based on behavioral checklists. And worse, the treatments often cause side effects that can side-track people into treatment plans that cause more problems than they cure. Hyper, distracted, difficulty focusing, can’t stay on topic? Check those boxes and you may get a diagnosis of ADHD and be prescribed a stimulant medication to help focus. In many people, this causes agitation and doesn’t really help focus. In addition, issues going to sleep may be a side effect of the stimulant. Go back to the doctor and he might prescribe you a sleeping pill to help with the sleeping problems. Maybe that pill doesn’t work so well and you don’t wake up refreshed. Work suffers and you need more focus so you return to the doctor, who ups the dose of the stimulant medication which helps you focus but causes more agitation. Now you come home and fight with your partner about things that typically didn’t bother you before all of the medication. Now off to couple’s therapy….Medication management doesn’t always end this way, but with a qEEG we have real data about the organ that we are treating: the brain. If I could see that the person in the example above had too much slow wave (Delta and Theta) activity, along with too much fast wave (Beta and High Beta) activity, we could have taken a much different approach. I would have known a stimulant might agitate that person and instead recommended some neurofeedback or other non-pharmacological therapies for the underlying reasons for the symptoms. This leads us to curing rather than coping. And that’s the goal. No longer do our treatments need to rely on guess work and behavioral checklists. We can see with precision the real-time activity in the brain with our current neuroscience, and we can get precise with what treatments can bring relief and real changes in functioning without chemical side effects.
