Teletherapy Home Services
New options for therapy care from the comfort of home.
Teletherapy can take the place of in-person therapy to ensure patients continue to receive necessary care from the comfort of their own homes.
*As of 3/23/2020, all Serin Center Therapy appointments will be moved to Teletherapy to ensure the safety of our patients and staff until further notice. Dr. Serin will be extending her hours and taking new patients to help those in need during this time. Note: This is for therapy services only. All other services are in-office visits.
What is Teletherapy?
Teletherapy is therapy delivered via a digital format vs. in-person therapy. Therapists and doctors use Skype, Zoom, private meeting rooms via software platforms, and other means to deliver services when they can’t otherwise meet face-to-face with their patients and clients.
What are the advantages?
During the Coronavirus crisis when many Americans are being advised to stay home, Teletherapy can take the place of in-person therapy to ensure patients continue to receive necessary care. Advantages include the time savings of not having to travel to and from the therapist or doctor’s office, and transportation cost savings. Even prior to the Coronavirus, Teletherapy was gaining popularity due to advances in technology.
Is Teletherapy private and confidential?
Serin Center therapists use HIPPA compliant software services, such as Theranest, to ensure privacy and confidentiality. Our therapists use secure wi-fi rather than public wi-fi to deliver services in private rooms. Patients are encouraged to be in areas in their home or office where they can ensure privacy as well and to not use public wi-fi to log into their therapy sessions.
Is Teletherapy as effective as in-person therapy?
A recent study showed Teletherapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3662387/. However, some therapeutic modalities, such as play therapy, are more difficult to deliver when the therapist cannot physically interact with the patient. EMDR Therapy is more effective with bi-lateral stimulation and this can be achieved by us shipping devices to the patient prior to their appointment for use during the appointment. If this is not possible then therapy can still be effective as many EMDR therapists use eye-movements for bi-lateral stimulation which does not necessarily require devices in the hands of the patient.
What kind of technology do I need for Teletherapy?
You will need a smartphone, a wi-fi connection, or a computer with a camera and microphone (internal or external) for successful therapy. Teletherapy can sometimes be administered with just a microphone but most therapists and patients agree that seeing each other during the session makes for a more effective session when possible. At present, Serin Center therapists do not engage in text therapy with their patients.
What tips do you have for Teletherapy?
Prepare for your session the way you would an in-office session. Think of what you would like to address in the session and be ready with any homework from your therapist. Create a quiet, private space to do therapy that is free from distractions. If you have pets, you may want them in or out depending on whether they are calming or distracting. If you have family members home, ensure they won’t disturb you during the session. Treat Teletherapy with the same respect as an in-office visit. This is your time to take care of yourself and make some positive life progress! Turn off notifications on your phone and limit other distractions. If you cannot create a quiet space, consider getting noise-canceling headphones or a white noise app on your phone to drown out sounds. If you haven’t used the microphone or camera on your computer, do a system test before the therapy session to make sure your equipment is working. Be prepared to start your session on time so you receive the full benefit. Many people are a bit apprehensive before their first appointment due to the technological nature of it but once they experience it, it’s much easier the second time.

Neurofeedback began in the 1960s when Dr. Barry Sterman at UCLA discovered cats who had undergone neurofeedback had a greater seizure threshold than other cats. Neurofeedback is now a treatment for seizures, ADHD, Autism, PTSD, and many other conditions. Technological advances allow us to get results that used to take 150 sessions in 30 sessions or fewer safely and non-invasively.
